'Michael Collins birthplace, Woodfield'
This is a painting of Michael Collin's birthplace in Woodfield, near Clonakilty in West Cork. The family home was burnt down in April 1921, the only buildings that remained were the outbuildings you see in the painting. However these buildings were the original home where Michael Collins and his siblings were born. It is now a well maintained and very tranquil site to visit, with lovely trees casting beautiful shadows when the sun comes out. Michael Collins is famous for his role in the Irish War of Independence and formation of the Irish Free State. He was killed during the subsequent Irish Civil War in Beal na Blath whilst visiting West Cork.
